ARTIST'S STATEMENT
I've always approached art through the practice of drawing. In my time at UC Berkeley I concentrated most of my degree on Renaissance drawing technique. Over time my interest became the paper itself over the mark making on the page. I began to use paper as a sculptural element as much as a picture plane to hold a 2 dimensional image.
This body of work originated in Venice, Italy. I had just completed a semester abroad with NYU, and had accumulated mountains of paintings on paper. I ended up cutting the paintings into segments, creating armatures and reassembling the paintings into sculpture.
When I returned to California, I began combining the painting segments with fragments of drawings. These new collages on wood panel allowed me to experiment with rhythm, pattern and texture as it relates to color. This series is part of my continued fascination with the process of combining figurative drawing, painting, collage and paper sculpture.
