ARTIST'S STATEMENT
Maya Kabat’s paintings explore the relationships of structure, geometry, color, and texture. She works with thick slabs of oil paint applied with flat tools intended for use with drywall compound. Areas of the surface are built, un-built, layered, mixed and remixed as the paintings evolve. Kabat is interested in the push and pull of structures and forms in space, with no direct reference point, where depth of field, scale and perspective all come into question.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Maya Kabat received an MFA from the University of California, Davis, in 2000. She has been awarded artist residencies at the Flotstanga Nature Preserve in Iceland, and at the London Intensive, a residency sponsored by the Camden Arts Centre and the Slade School of Fine Art.
