ARTIST'S STATEMENT
My paintings explore the relationship between representation and abstraction. Subjects are selected from my California environment, often from the San Francisco Bay Area, where I live and work. These urban images serve as the starting point for my painting process.
My perspective is usually from a high, distant vantage point which emphasizes the flat quality and patterns I like to depict in my compositions. While my work has easily identifiable subject matter, my main concern is the act of painting. Evidence remains of initial sketching, mark-making, sequential refinements, masking and layering. Through masking and selective editing, I leave traces of previous stages, and it is not uncommon to find a section of pencil sketch on white gesso next to a heavily worked painted area.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Mazzetti lives and works in San Francisco, where he specializes in cityscapes and abstracted landscapes. As a second generation artist and Californian, he is strongly attracted to the many visual delights of the Bay Area and has developed a unique approach to depicting them in his acrylic paintings. Mazzetti studied at the Academy of Art College in the early 1970s, concentrating on Graphic Design and Illustration.
