While the show is generally abstract in style, each artist has been inspired by nature in their own way. For example, Suzanne Frazier’s circular flower paintings and prints are derived from highly simplified palettes that she creates from harvesting the colors of individual pixels from her digital flower photographs. Tobias Tovera’s undulating compositions are inspired by coastal topography, tidal patterns, and geodes. Juan Alonso-Rodriguez ‘color field paintings are inspired by moments gazing at the horizon across the sea, as well as childhood fantasies of travel to deep space. Kate Zimmer’s colorful paintings trace roads, rivers, and pathways, as they divide up a landscape that refers both to the Bay Area, and to the artist’s native Midwest. The show’s featured sculptor, Bean Finneran, uses a most elemental material (clay) to create forms that are built by stacking individual curved pieces in such a way that they cannot be moved without first taking them apart and then reconstructing them one by one. Her abstract shapes also evoke natural forms such as sea anemones, coral reefs, haystacks, and wind-blown grasses.
